Llanelli Naturalists Newsletter - September 1984

Recently Dic Davies of Llanelli Public Library brought my attention to an article, in a c. 1904 provincial newspaper, which mentioned the killing of an otter in Stepney St., Llanelli. It was killed by two policemen with their truncheons - a sad reflection of prevailing attitudes of those days - and was presumed to have wandered from Old Castle Pond (or more likely, the Afon Lliedi).

Also regarding the destruction of animals, Dilwyn Roberts in his researches into old parish documents, found a reference in Pembrey Parish Vestry papers to the payment of 2/6d for the killing of a 'wild cat' in the 1820's.
