We still await the result of the Welsh Office deliberations on Pembrey Saltings. All has gone very quiet recently, we can only hope that the proposed Local Nature Reserve and the associated plans can be put in place without further conflict. The local authority now seem far more anxious to reach agreement and a fresh spirit of co-operation seems to be prevailing over other matters of mutual interest.

The development of Penclacwydd by the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust was, of course, initiated by the Borough Council as part of its tourism strategy. The recent opening of the centre by Sir David Attenborough marks the climax of several years of detailed planning and hard labour. We now not only have a first class visitor attraction of the 'right' kind in the area but also a centre having facilities for research and education in the study of wildlife in general and wildfowl in particular. I strongly urge you to visit Penclacwydd if you have not already done so: you will be impressed.

Remaining with the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, I am very pleased to be able to thank Tony Richardson, Penclacwydd's Director, for permission to use the illustration on the front of this issue of the Newsletter. It is adapted from a drawing by one of Tony's staff and used in their puplicity material. I must also thank all the other contributers who have again provided a varied collection of articles which I am sure will be of great interest.

1992 marks the twenty-first year since the foundation of the society and I Pope that the Newsletters and programme will reflect this anniversary. I would be very grateful if those of you who have been with us from the start could contribute recollections in some form or other, for instance short article for publication or the reshowing of those few forgotten' photographs of an early field meeting.    If enough archive material is forthcoming,    I would like to dedicate one of the indoor meetings towards the end of the year to its presentation. Please start rummaging!

Again a comprehensive programme of meetings is on offer for the current year, I hope that you will be able to attend those of interest to you: please make a note in your diary before this Newsletter is mislaid. I look forward to seeing you at one or more venues in the near future.
