During the last decade, errors have invariably crept into the text of the Newsletter, so it is thought appropriate that the more major of these factual errors are cdrrected, minor errors (including spelling mistakes) are not dealt with.
March 1983 (p.5) A Naturalists Guide...No3: the area between Pwll and Burry Port. For "bog bush cricket Metrioptera brachyptera" read "dark bush cricket Pholidoptera qriseoaptera.
late March 1984 (p.7) An Introduction to the Dragonflies of Carmarthenshire -
IKM Gomphus vulqatissimus is "reported from Margam Park in Glamorgan". This record source (Gilham, 1982) is erroneous (though this species is now known to occur on the Tywi and Teifi).
Late March 1984 (p.23) Bryophyte Survey - Craig Derwyddion, "Druid Rocks" - R.H.Davies & R.N. Stringer Ghost orchid Epipoqium aphyllum and Scottish primrose Primula scotica reported to the authors as occuring in the Pant-y-llyn (SN61) areas, are clearly incorrect.
June 1984 (p.3) Short Notes: Swan Mussel. Anon (IKM) Anodonta cygnaea, reported from an old ox-bow on the Tywi near Dryslwyn SN5620, was subsequently determined by Dr. M.P. Kerney BM(NH) as large specimens (hence the confusion) of A. anatina (see also p12, Sept 1985 Newsl.).
December 1984 (p.1) Secretary's Notes - (R.D.Pryce) - concerning the rediscovery of ivy-leaved duckweed Lemna trisulca at the Machynys Ponds (SS59). In contrast to what is stated, the botanist James Motley (c.1821-1859) is not particularly associated with Swansea, though he did much work in SE Carmarthenshire and on the western coast of the Vale of Glamorgan.
March 1985 (p.20) Butterflies in Carmarthenshire - An Introduction, Part 1 - IKM Silver-studded blue Plebeius arqus, are stated to occur at Cencoed-uchaf, Capel Dyddgen Quarry (near Crwbin), Mynydd Llangyndeyrn and on the coast at Machynys. These records must be disregarded and there are no definite modern Carmarthenshire sightings, though it may possibly occur. This species is discussed at length in Morgan (1989) and it has recently been refound in Pembrokeshire (Elliot, 1991).
June 1985 (p.7) Report of Field Meeting: Tywyn Burrows (SN36-05-etc) - IKM For "common newt Triturius vulqaris" read "palmate newt T. helveticus", the true status of the former in the county needs to be established.
June 1985 (p.10) Butterflies in Carms., Part 2 - IKM (see note for March 1985, regarding the silver-studded blue).
Sept. 1985 (p.4) Scarce Carmarthenshire Birds, Part 3: The Niqhtiar - D.H.V. Roberts The reference to "one on passage near Glyn Abbey in mid-May 1981" is presumed to be the result of a misunderstood communication between IKM and the author, the former did not record one at that site/date.
Sept. 1985 (p.9) A Naturalists Guide...No12: The Parc-y-llonq - Pontnewydd area, Lower Gwendraeth-fawr.
The locally-popular explanation given for Pont Spwdwr as "Pont y Ysbryd-gwyn" is now discredited by local antiquarians (also ref. Dec 1985 Newsletter (p.8) "Letters to the Editor", from D.H.V. Roberts).
June 1986 (P.10) A Naturalists Guide...No15: Bynea for "sea wormwood" read "wormwood" (Artemesia absinthium).
Winter 1990-91 (p.19) Bats in Carmarthenshire - N.R. Matthew. It is stated that the lesser horseshoe bat has not been recorded in Carmarthenshire, whereas it has (though extremely rarely). A note further explaining its status will appear in a later Newsletter. Editdrial apologies to Neil Matthew for consistently mis-spelling his name over the years!
Summer 1991 (p.13) Carmarthenshire Ladybirds - IKM A.P. Fowles has pointed out that the inland record of Coccidula scutellata (typically found in coastal fens) may be erroneous.
Summer 1991 (pp30-31) Review: The Abundance and Distribution of Wildfowl and Waders on the Burry Inlet pp30 and 31 have been transposed.
