One morning, on the way to work this summer, a well-known local ornithologist - who shall remain nameless - excitedly thought that he heard the "churring" sound of a Nightjar singing near Furnace (the Nightjar is now very rare locally). Being the determined and keen bird-watcher that he is, the next spare moment saw him creeping stealthily, like a Praying Mantis after its prey, towards this magic sound - the return of the Nightjar to Furnace. No obstacle - a nagging daughter waiting a lift to school, bemused onlookers staring at this quietly shuffling bird-watcher stalking his goal, or later triffid-like brambles, could deter him as the sound became closer and louder.

As he successfully crept around the Last Bush, binoculars held, eagle--eyed and nerves taut, he was ready for this elusive Nightjar which surely was only a stone's¬ throw away. But he was to be disappointed - for the sound was a geriatric ventilation fan of the Stradey Park Hotel!    Tough luck, Mr. X, - we all make mistakes.
