Most people recognise a poplar when they see one especially a strong smelling balsam-poplar, but putting a name to it is more difficult. Most are hybrids or cultivars of hybrids making identification even harder.
Introduction
History of recording
Populus was little studied in the county by earlier botanists for various reasons. Taxonomic difficulties with the P. x canadensis cultivars (Hybrid Black-poplars) and with P. section Tacamahaca (Balsam Poplars) were undoubtedly the main ones. P. tremula (Aspen) was recorded in its native habitat and P. alba (White Poplar) and P. x canescens (Grey Poplar) as established aliens or planted. Like conifers, poplars which had been planted tended to be either ignored or occasionally recorded as P. k canadensis . Interest in this genus suddenly grew when on 1 June 1991 GH found in marshy ground east of Burry Port (Dyfatty Marsh) a large fallen tree whose trunk was not completely severed and was still producing good leafy growth. The leaves were rather large and from their shape the nearest he could determinate it was Populus nigra. By this time J. Jobling, the Populus referee for the BSBI, had sadly died and GH send the material to R.D. Meikle, author of BSBI Handbook No. 4: Willows and Poplars, from which GH had made his tentative determination. R. D. Meikle (18.2.93 in litt.) considered the plant to be 'P. nigra var. betulifolia' but pointed out that it was more pubescent and had more acuminate leaves than any of the originally planted trees in his part of Somerset.
The Fieldwork
Further trips along the railway network in the county showed that poplars could be spotted easily from the train, and just east of Llanelli station were seen to dominate the landscape around the low-lying coastal fields called the Llanelli Levels by local naturalists. GH decided to investigate these plants and over the next few years with the ensuing help of I. K. Morgan had plotted on six-inch (1:10000) maps all the Populus in the area. Each tree was given a number on the map and this corresponded to the collection number for any voucher specimens.
Work was assisted by the publication of Poplars for Wood Production and Amenity (Jobling, 1990) which gave keys and brief descriptions of the species. It soon became clear from this and field observations that one of the key times to identify Populus was in late April or early May, depending on whether the season was early or late. The initial work on the Llanelli Levels was showing that many of the older trees were P. x canadensis 'Marilandica' and P. x canadensis 'Serotina' and the younger ones planted, for example near the Trostre Tinplate Works, were P. x canadensis 'Robusta'.
Following this initial locality for the survey, Populus was being noted by IKM and GH from other areas of the county, such as the coastal areas of Burry Port, Kidwelly Flats, Pembrey Forest and the adjoining Penybedd Wood, and in several places on the west side of Llanelli. The line-planted poplars at M.o.D. (Pendine) were later found to have been planted in 1975. Inland, the genus was found commonly planted along the Tywi Valley between Carmarthen and Llandovery and even up to Ystradffin near the Llyn Brianne dam.
Arthur Chater who was also intensively studying the genus in Cardiganshire was invited to look at the ones around the Llanelli and Pembrey Forest areas by the author, Ian Morgan and R. D. Pryce, the vice-county recorder for Crams. The meeting took place on 20 Apr 1994, at that critical time for Populus in spring. The most interesting taxon to emerge from the meeting was P. nigra subsp. betulifolia, the native Black Poplar. Further details can be found under that entry. With the discovery of this taxon in the county, IKM made a point of searching for this and discovered several new sites for it in the south of the county (Morgan, 1995 & 1996).
Another meeting with AOC took place in the Tywi Valley on 3 May 1995 when P. x canadensis 'Eugenei' and P. x canadensis '1-78' emerged as new taxa for the county.
Identification of Carmarthenshire Poplars
Nomenclature
Hybrid poplars are normally referred to by their hybrid name rather than their, sometimes lengthy, hybrid formula and this method is adopted here. Not all poplars have English or Welsh names, in fact, many names have only recently been coined for new Floras and for check-lists of names. Those used by Stace (1997) and Davies & Jones (1995) are adopted here.
Visiting times
With the exception of P. alba, P. x canescens and the native P. tremula, it was necessary to make two visits, and in some cases three, at different times of year, in order to record the various key characters for identification. The main dates for survey work around Carmarthenshire are shown in Table 1. Note the large number of visits in the second half of April and in early May to use the relative time of leafing of each taxon as a guide to identification. The different taxa seemingly all come into leaf in the same order. [Leafing, here, refers to the stage of unfurling of the leaves to give the young freshly opened ones in spring, i.e. not the stage when leaves would be considered mature for the first time a few weeks later].
The colour of freshly emerged leaves and the sex of catkins were also noted at this time (see Table 2). Bronze leaves appear this colour from a distance, but on closer inspection each leaf is seen to be a mixture of red and light green. Now is also the time to look for pubescence on the young twigs and petioles, as the hairs tend to fall off as the season progresses (glabrescence).
The visit to the Tywi Valley (3 May 1995) was made after a prolonged winter. That spring, the leafing of the different taxa took place later than usual and much closer together.
The later visits were made for mature leaves, mostly in June and July. There were numerous records made at other times together with specimens collected for identification.
Growth habit
This was of use in some cases, mostly where the tree was free-standing, as was the arrangement of the peripheral young twigs. The latter proved very useful for detecting more P. nigra subsp. betulifolia in the county. The outline and branching of a tree can be recorded by a photograph. These two features are more obvious when the tree is not in full leaf. The prints can be included with the voucher specimen suitably cross-referenced and can be attached to the herbarium sheet.
Catkins
These were examined when available early in the season. This was usually done when young twigs were examined with emerging leaves, although sometimes one may have been too late in the case of the male catkins of early !eaters or too early in the case of female catkins. Many poplar cultivars are unisexual so that taking the trouble to establish the sex of the tree can eliminate many taxa.
It was fairly easy to establish whether trees were male as catkins would fall to the ground early, whereas female cultivars were more difficult to prove as they tended to retain the catkins until the fruit were shed. In fact, binoculars were necessary to detect some catkins, usually high up in the tree. Visiting trees after strong winds proved useful for finding catkins. In some cases catkins could not be found, and for certain trees it is likely that in some years catkins are few, but in 'good' years they may be prolific. The latter is particularly noticed when a female tree produces a mass of downy seeds in an urban area.
Mature leaves
Outlines of these are given in Fig. 1. The majority of P. x canadensis cultivars have mature leaves with truncate to broadly cuneate bases and these are illustrated using 'Serotina'. 'Marilandica' and 'Eugenei', with distinctly cuneate bases, are illustrated using the former.

See Table 2 for part-summary of identification features for each taxon and Fig. 1 for illustrations. The Appendix contains individual records arranged by locality to aid the visiting botanist. However, all P. nigra ssp. betulifolia records are listed together at the end.
White Poplar, Aspen and their Hybrid
Populus alba L. (White Poplar) (Poplysen Wen)
Widespread, with a similar distribution to P. x canescens.
Usually easily identified by the palmately lobed mature leaves which are densely white-tomentose on the underside. However, on saplings and on many trees this diagnostic lobing may not be present making identification tricky. In this situation the possibility of back-crossing with P. x canescens needs to be considered.
Populus x canescens (Aiton) Sm. (= P. alba x P. tremula) (Grey Poplar) (Poplysen Lwyd) Widespread.
The leaves are usually irregularly broad toothed with undersides ranging from dense tomentose to subglabrous. Back-crossing has not been proved so far but planted material near the east end of Stephens Way, Pensarn, Carmarthen (SN412194) could be a back-cross with P. tremula.
Populus tremula L. (Aspen) (Aethnen)
Widespread even around the coastal belt and the only certain native poplar in the county.
At maturity the leaves are suborbicular with an array of broad blunt teeth, smaller and more uniform than in P. x canescens. The undersides are glabrous or sparsely pubescent. Suckering leaves can have cordate bases. The quivering of the leaves in the slightest breeze is a result of the well flattened, rather long petiole.
Black-Poplar and its Cultivars
Populus nigra L. (Black-poplar) (Poplysen Ddu)
Trees which are neither pubescent nor fastigiate occur, for example, some of those line-planted at M.o.D. Pendine. They were introduced in 1955 and have not been assigned to any specific cultivar.
Populus nigra subsp. betulifolia (Pursh) Dippel (Black-poplar)
At least 22 localities were recorded in the county during the current survey. They are confined to the coastal areas between the rivers Loughor and Gwendraeth Fawr, usually as single trees in hedges, but also at M.o.D. Pendine where they were line planted in 1955. A group of four trees were found by IKM at St Clears, probably planted.
The trees identified in the vice-county vary considerably between each other in the degree of pubescence of twigs and the size of leaves. Catkins found on Carets. trees have all been male. Female trees are rare in the British Isles. The dense ascending peripheral young twigs make the tree detectable from some distance. The pubescent young twigs and petioles [best seen in spring, with hand-lens] and mature leaves with elongate-acute tips and broadly cuneate bases are typical. Small burrs have been found on the trunks of some Carmarthenshire trees. One should not necessarily expect large burrs, as shown in photographs and illustrations of magnificent, old Black-poplars. Leafing mid-season.
A tree was first noted in the current survey in 1991, at Dyfatty Marsh, Burry Port (SN454008) by GH as mentioned in the introduction. On 20 Apr 1994, another was found at the meeting with AOC. It was located in old hedging near the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust Centre, Penclacwydd. This was believed at the time to be the second record for the county.
However, examination of exsiccatae in the Populus collections at NMW, by GH, revealed that in 1945 J.A. Webb, while collecting plants specifically from Carets. for the herbarium, had found P. nigra ssp. betulifolia from the Morfa area east of Llanelli, which is adjacent to Penclacwydd. The pubescence on a few twigs could still be seen after 49 years, and that, despite the specimen having been collected 'c. 15 July', a time of year when many hairs would have fallen off. So this could be the earliest record of P. nigra ssp. betulifolia for Carmarthenshire; but no trees remain in the Morfa area. Populus x canadensis 'Regenerate' (= P. x canadensis 'Marilandica' x P. x canadensis 'Serotina') (Railway Poplar)
This is represented by a single tree near Llandovery railway station which justifies the English name. It was often planted along railways but is now dying out being no longer planted. It was hoped that this may have been present among the many trees near the railway line east of Llanelli or along railway lines elsewhere in the county, but until 1995 none had been found.
It was when the BSBI held their Crams. Flora weekend based at Llandovery in 1995 that GH took AOC and party to examine large old trees he had found around a disused railway depot near Llandovery station (SN762342) on the Central Wales Railway (Heart of Wales Line). One of the trees proved to be this taxon. Research by GH in the many books now published on the Central Wales Railway found one plate clearly showing the tree in its younger days (Muckley, In: M. Smith, 1995).
The cultivar does not have an obvious main axis and has a crown with usually asymmetrically ascending branches, as does the Llandovery tree, A female cultivar leafing late.
Populus x canadensis 'Robusta' (= P. deltoides 'Cordate' x P. nigra 'Plantierensis')
25 localities noted. Fine stands are often found around sites of heavy-industry in South Wales such as at Trostre (SS532995), Port Talbot and especially at Llanwern in Mons. It is widespread along the Tywi Valley and in the SE around the coalfield and coastal belt and has been frequently planted in the last twenty five years.
One of the early-leafing poplars with bronze emerging leaves. The columnar outline with an obvious central axis and its early bronze leaves make the plant easy to spot in April. The young shoots in spring are slightly pubescent (hand lens) but one may need to examine a few shoots before one can find this. If all are glabrous it is likely to be 'Heidemij'. A male cultivar.
Populus x canadensis 'Heidemij'
5 localities noted. Two trees grow next to 'Gelrica' in Penybedd Wood, nr Pembrey Forest (SN415019) and there are several in mixed plantations of poplars around Dryslwyn (SN5419 - SN5619).
Another male, early-leafer, slightly later than 'Robusta' with fine bronze emerging leaves and glabrous young shoots in spring. Compare the far more numerous 'Robusta' which is very similar.
Populus x canadensis 'Eugenei' (= P. x canadensis 'Regenerate' x P. nigra 'Italica') Carolina Poplar
4 scattered records but the best examples are the 16 tall trees in the small park in Llandybie (SN618152). They dominate the skyline as one approaches the town from Llandeilo.
A male, mid- to late-leafer in the county and may therefore be confused with 'Serotina' but it has a narrower outline with an unforked straight trunk. The mature leaves are also somewhat cuneate.
Populus x canadensis 'Marilandica' (= P. x canadensis 'Serotina' x P. nigra ssp. nigra)
9 localities noted. There are many old trees on the Llanelli Levels nr Morfa, Llanelli and there are scattered records in the Tywi Valley, but it appears to be little planted these days.
Young leaves emerge yellow-green, without bronzing, which if caught in late April can be a useful character. Catkins are female and therefore more difficult to find.
Balsam-Poplars and their Hybrids
Populus x jackii Sarg. (= P. balsamifera x P. deltoides, P. candicans, P. gileadensis,) (Balm-of-Gilead) (Poplysen Gilead)
4 records around the SE quarter of the county.
Often suckering. Many leaves with cordate bases. Female catkins only, usually exceeding the leaves. Young twigs and petioles pubescent with uniformly longer hairs than most hairs in 'Balsam Spire'. A female, very early leafer.
Populus x jackii 'Aurora' (P. candicans 'Aurora')
4 widespread records in the southern half of the county. Three plantings are close to housing.
A variegated balsam-poplar, still with cordate bases to the leaves like P. x jackii. Often, the variegation is not visible in the young leaves and develops later in the year.
Populus nigra 'Italica' (Lombardy-poplar) (Poplysen Lombardy)
The classic fastigiate poplar often seen in landscape paintings of the Low Countries, but the few records of this taxon need confirmation as they may not have been separated from 'Plantierensis'. 'Italica' has glabrous young twigs and petioles whereas 'Plantierensis' has somewhat pubescent young twigs and petioles. It is best to examine this character in spring because the hairs tend to be lost as the season progresses (glabrescence). 'Plantierensis' is usually less lightly fastigiate and more vigorous. Both leaf early to early mid-season.
All the fastigiate P. nigra examined by GH in Crams. and Glam. has proved to be 'Plantierensis'. 'Italica' appears to have been on the wane throughout the century as a planted fastigiate poplar. In fact, Cansdale et al. (1938) reported that of the fastigiate Lombardy-poplar specimens received for confirmation only 18 proved to be 'Italica' with about 45 'Plantierensis'. Similarly, the remaining trees planted half a century ago in 1945 along Whitchurch Common in Cardiff by the American Forces stationed in the area are all 'Plantierensis'.
Populus nigra 'Gigantea' (Giant Lombardy-poplar)
There are four records, all from the Tywi Valley. A conspicuous line of pollarded trees along a drainage ditch near the railway line, east of the houses in Morfa, Llanelli (SS521990) could be this cultivar or 'Marilandica'. It was this which sparked off the author's interest in the poplars of the Llanelli Levels. They have female catkins and no basal glands to the leaf blade, the latter typical of all P. nigra sensu lato found in Carmarthenshire.
Far less fastigiate than 'Plantierensis' and with female catkins. Leafing late.
Populus nigra 'Plantierensis' (= P. nigra ssp. betulifolia x P. nigra *Italica') (Plantières Poplar) A few confirmed records from the southern centre of the county, from Nantgaredig (SN491202) southwards to Morfa, Llanelli where there is a fine line of them when approaching Llanelli railway station from Swansea, at Morfa School (SS517991).
See under P. nigra 'Italica' for distinguishing features. A male cultivar.
Hybrid Black-Poplar and its Cultivars
Populus x canadensis Moench (= P. deltoides x P. nigra) (Hybrid Black-poplar) (Poplysen (Mu Ffrengig)
Many records refer to this hybrid, without them having being split into one of the many cultivars. In summer and autumn it is usually not possible to differentiate further. Spring visits are necessary to examine catkins and to observe the relative times of leafing.
Populus x canadensis 'Serotina' (= P. deltoides x P. nigra ssp. nigra) (Black-Italian Poplar)
By far the commonest cultivar of P. x canadensis in the county with 61 localities noted. It is usually the easiest to identify if one chooses early May to do so, as at that time of year the trees of this taxon still look bare from a distance, with most of all other trees in the landscape having come into leaf. It is the latest leafing poplar in the county.
The leaf base is truncate or slightly cordate and the margins of the leaf are usually strongly but bluntly serrate. A male cultivar.
Populus x canadensis 'Gelrica'
Nine scattered records. It is planted with 'Heidemij' in Penybedd Wood, nr Pembrey Forest (SN415019). It has a distinct whitish-grey bark recalling Silver Birch. This character diminishes as the tree ages.
A male cultivar leafing late.
Populus x canadensis '1-78'
Noted from two localities - nr Golden Grove (SN592206) and the edge of Dynevor Park, Llandeilo (SN624226) where there is a fine line-planting, visible as one approaches the town from the east along the A40. The capital letter 'I' here refers to the International Poplar Commission. The cultivar arose spontaneously in Italy in the 1920s, probably in the Po Valley.
Similar to 'Serotina' and 'Gelrica' but female and leafing mid-season.
Populus trichocarpa Torr. & A. Gray ex Hook. (Western Balsam-poplar)
More frequent than P. x jackii (P. candicans). 8 widespread records across the southern half of the county but not recorded from the Llanelli area.
A balsam-poplar with a bushy trunk down to its base. Leaves with rounded base and length / breath ratio of leaves greater than in the other Balsam-poplars mentioned, giving a narrower appearance to the leaves. Petioles with even-length hairs. A very early leafer which can have male or female catkins.
Populus 'Balsam Spire' (P. balsamifera x P. trichocarpa) (Hybrid Balsam-poplar)
The commonest balsam-poplar in the county with 21 localities noted. Widespread in the Tywi Valley between Carmarthen and Llandovery and on the coastal belt between the River Loughor and Pembrey Forest. It is being increasingly planted.
Another early leafing balsam-poplar with a narrow outline and without suckers; rounded bases to the leaves; catkins female, about half the length of P. x jackii catkins. Twigs and petioles with mixed hairs mostly shorter than in P. x jackii but with a few long ones. This feature clearly visible with a hand-lens.
Other Records
Populus ?tremuloides Michx. (American Aspen)
Low, broad, trees similar to this species occur on fixed dunes at the north beach, Ferryside (SN368108) GH 1989, but they do not quite match herbarium material of this species from North America. The Ferryside trees have bright red petioles.
Populus nigra 'Vereecken'
There is one record of a tree planted in the garden of a house SW of Llandovery (SN7532).
Populus x canadensis 'Serotina' x P. x jackii . There is a record of this as P. x canadensis 'Serotina' x P. candicans, but this would need expert confirmation to be accepted.
The Future
We now have a reasonable idea of the taxa present in the vice-county but the records cited in the Appendix only represent an interim account of the trees in the county. Many more need identification and a fuller account of their distribution will appear in the 'Flora of Carmarthenshire' currently in preparation. Because of the taxonomic difficulties with this genus there will be several that will remain unidentified.
Towards the end of the main survey work in the Llanelli area it became apparent that with the recent landscaping of the old industrial wastelands and the building of new link roads, new cultivars of Populus were being planted. In fact, two plantings of named new cultivars are now known from the county (I. K. Morgan, pers. comm. 1998). Some of the names of new cultivars can be gleaned from the forestry literature (Forestry Authority, 1994), for example P. deltoides x P. trichocarpa ' Beaupré' and 'Boelare' ; P. deltoides x P. nigra 'Ghoy' and P. trichocarpa 'Columbia River and 'Trichobel' to name but a few. 'Beaupré' is one of the fastest growing trees in Europe.
The morphological features of these approved cultivars need to be unravelled for the field botanists of the next millennium, but with many more cultivars being produced this task will get more difficult if not impossible using morphological criteria. New methods outside the scope of the field botanist are already being sort. The most useful of these to date includes the use of RAPD (Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA) markers (Cottrell, Forrest White, 1997).

These poplars were later found to have been planted in 1951 for the Festival of Britain (R H Davies pers. comm . to IKM) This agrees with an annual-ring count of the trees when they were felled. |
