We have a few patches of both Bristle Club-rush Isolepis setacea and Slender Club-rush I. cernua in the ‘lawn’ which remain a lovely bright green colour over the winter. The accompanying Oval Sedge Carex ovalis, however, is a dull brown colour – but a subtle combination.  We have several other sedge species which Richard has asked me to grow-on from tiny specimens brought back from the field for determination.  I anticipate a great diversification of our lawn in future as I will be encouraging the establishment of both sedges and club-rushes.  They are very useful to become familiar with their vegetative characters when the plants are not flowering.  A warning though – we introduced both Greater and Lesser Pond-sedges Carex riparia and C. acutiformis into one of the ponds. These are real thugs and are now taking over the flower beds as well as the mown areas!
