If you come across dark brown or black shiny creatures which rapidly jump under logs or leaves, resembling and about the size of the more familiar sandhoppers, it is likely that you have found the landhopper. This terrestrial member of the shrimp family was introduced to Britain from Australia and is becoming increasingly frequent in South-western and Western Britain. They are well established in woodland on parts of Gower (eg around Caswell Bay), and have been more recently found under deep laurel leaf litter near Furnace, Llanelli, SN504016.
