Llanelli Naturalists Newsletter - October 2001 - No 67
Ian Morgan

WWT staff member Nigel Williams informs me of the incredible count of 217 Little Egrets which were roosting in the ‘European Pen’ in early September, making this one of the highest UK counts, if not the highest count for this species.  Very recent Penclacwydd highlights include 8 Grey Phalaropes on 7 October (see photo page 2), a Great White Egret in mid-late August and a White Stork at the end of that month.  Following on the breeding successes reported on page 11, 2001 continued the trend with eighteen pairs of Lapwing rearing 17 young whilst 10 nesting pairs of Gadwall, c.15 pairs of Tufted Duck and Pochard also bred.
