Neil Matthew, Iain Mackay and others have been actively involved in promoting the fortunes of this much-declined seed-eater in the Tywi Valley, (in the days of mixed farming, this species also occurred in the Llanelli area).  They have provided regular winter feeding stations for Tree Sparrows and erected nest boxes – in 2000, 32 birds were fledged from 13 nests.  As  well as the mid - Tywi Valley (Abergwili to above Llandeilo), the only other Carmarthenshire Tree Sparrow area - near Pendine - has also been provided with nest boxes.  Neil, incidentally, is lucky enough to have Tree Sparrows regularly visiting his garden feeding station near Ffairfach.
