One seldom has the opportunity of seeing a swift at close quarters. The usual view is of a black streak across the sky.

One day in May 1984, while busily working in my 11th floor office, heard a scraping noise coming from the corner of the window. A swift had entered through the small window at some time and -as quite helpless once inside. It stretched its very long wings and fluttered to the floor.    I have never appreciated what a beautiful bird it is, more a very dark grey than jot black. The face is delicate and there was no attempt to peck as when other birds are handled. It seemed to be all wing and extremely light to hold. The legs arc extremely feeble things with sharp claws that got caught in the carpet.    It remained quite still when picked up and examined. A few people came to see it before it was launched from the 11th floor window back to its natural environment and away over the Town Hill.
