Congratulations to Eden Hopkins, aged 10, from Llanelli, who won the Llanelli Naturalists Award for her painting of wildflowers at the Llanedi Show held in August. The competition, sponsored by the Llanelli Naturalists, gave children under 14 the opportunity to exhibit their own drawings and paintings on the theme of wildflowers. Eden’s picture of several wildflowers showed sensitivity and skill. Eden is seen with her prize of a £10 book token and the award. This was the first time that the Naturalists have sponsored a class at the Show and it proved popular with the children.
The theme of wildflowers was continued in the marquee, which was decorated with photographs of wildflowers with their histories and uses. There was a small stall with information on the Llanelli Naturalists and the Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales. The tallest nettle Urtica dioica proved to be a giant and despite hefty competition the plant which won was 269cm in height.
