Slow-worms in compost - This year’s compost-making has been more interesting than usual as each time I go to add more material  I see between 3 and 6 Slow-worms of varying sizes on top of the decaying material. The compost is in a lidded plastic conical bin without a base so that it rests directly on the soil. In spring 2001 I filled it almost to the top with partly made compost from an adjacent heap. Soon after this slow-worms were seen on top of the vegetable matter inside. Careful approach and removal of the lid usually reveals six Slow-worms which then burrow down out of sight within about twenty seconds.
